Kenneth McLeay RSA

All the full length figures incorporated into our title pages are taken from the Highlands of Scotland by Kenneth McLeay. Here we tell you about - and show you - the full range of his incomparable watercolours - any of which you can buy in our Shop

An example of the minute detail incorporated into Mcleay's fascinating portraits.Kenneth McLeay was a renowned Victorian miniaturist responsible for two magnificently illustrated volumes entitled the Highlands of Scotland  published by Royal Command in 1870, the original water colours now being owned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and held in Windsor Castle.

Volume I contains the detailed prints of eight Retainers of the Royal Household at Balmoral and seven portraits of Clans and Followings. Volume II contains 16 portraits under the heading of Principal Clans & Followings.

These 31 paintings of McLeay's are without doubt the most detailed portraits of the period showing in astonishing detail, the individuals, their Highland dress and - most importantly - the tartans they wore. Victorian lithography has never been surpassed and the prints in the books look as if they were McLeay's originals. The Tartans Authority has permission to reproduce these and can make them available in two sizes:

A4 (297mm x 210mm [11.75 inches x 8.25 inches] ) at £20 each.
A3 (420mm x 297mm [16.5 inches x 11.75 inches]) at £30 each.

Each illustration is individually printed on matt archive paper and dispatched in a strong mailing tube. The majority of the paintings are of groups of Highlanders in an appropriate landscape background and the following list gives the tartans featured (underlined), the names of the subjects in bold and then the portrait background in italics. The initial references (M1, M2 etc) are the order numbers to be found in the SHOP.
