This tartan was designed by Verna MacMillan and registered at the Scottish Tartans Society, in Comrie Scotland, in 1985 on the occasion of Cape Breton’s Bicentennial
The following was composed in 1985 by Vincent Smith, Allan MacMillan and Verna MacMillan:
BLUE for the water, the sky above and the blueberries that grow.
WHITE for the cross of St. Andrew, the Barite and the snow.
GOLD for the clean sandy beaches and the rising of the sun.
RED for the beautiful sunsets which are second to none.
GREEN for the mountains, spruce and pine, as proud and tall they stand.
And the grass that blows in the wind like waves upon the land.
When settlers came from Europe’s shores so many years ago,
They brought with them a pride and strength that’s not seen anymore.
They faced the harsh cold winter storms, had many hungry days.
They lived by Faith and Fear of God and strict religious ways.
This TARTAN, that we weave today, pays tribute to the old,
The flag they left, the shores they found, this HERITAGE is told.
