Designed by International Tartans of Edinburgh whose website notes state: "Elizabeth Foulkes, Provost of South Ayrshire Council launched the Ayrshire tartan to coincide with the launch of the Ryanair air-link from Prestwick to Frankfurt by commissioning tartan outfits and distributing ties and scarves to all the guests." However, the original Ayrshire tartan (#436) designed by Phil Smith which appeared to have been accepted by use and wont, had been designed 14 years earlier
