Willie Scobie was born in Helensburgh in 1953. Several
generations of his ancestors, on both sides of the family, worked
in the textile industry: Paisley weavers - Paton's Mill, Alloa -
United Turkey Red in the Vale of Leven.
Willie has spent his life living and working in the Vale
of Leven and Dumbarton area. He was a local government officer for
He has been fascinated by Scottish history and loved
tartan since childhood. As a young man, reading the "MacGregor
Trilogy", by Nigel Tranter, kindled his interest in thehistoryof
tartan. Later, discovering "Tartan - The Highland Textile", by the
late James D. Scarlett M.B.E., led to a sixteen year friendship
which was something of a master-disciple relationship.
Willie is married with three young children. He has
designed several tartans and writes historical novels under the
pseudonym of Alexander Tait.
