Alison Stewart
Australian by birth but of the Stewarts of Garth. She was a
history graduate and was, nominally, companion to Stuart's Aunt
Majel Davidson. Her position in the Society was Director of
Research which, in practice, meant farming out queries to the
Advisory Panel. Aunt Majel had become involved with the Oxford
Movement and had a large house, Powis House at Blairlogie, outside
Stirling where a remarkable collection of maiden ladies had
collected as a sort of commune. I cannot describe the atmosphere of
the place; it was full of fun, laughter, peace and Christianity and
an extraordinary variety of people drifted through it. Alison died
fairly early on but left her mark. She and DC Stewart were both
pretty sturdy characters but noticeably frightened of each
other.
