Welcome to the Tartan Design Studio - a unique online facility provided for you through an exclusive agreement with one of our founder members, The House of Tartan.

The fact that Tartan is a living and evolving art form has been promoted around the world by this innovative Internet company and we hope you’ll enjoy this simple-to-follow programme. With it, you can design your own tartan in minutes - just for the fun of it or perhaps in a more serious vein, as the basis for producing your own Personal or Family tartan.

  • Quickly design your own unique Tartan.
    Experiment with colours and thread counts. 
    Produce an image.
    Change image size.
    Sign up as a Tartan Design Studio user and - if you’re a Member of the Scottish Tartans Authority - register your tartan in the Studio’s database. You can then retrieve your design(s) at any time.
    (If you’re not a Member, then you just take a note of your colours and threadcounts and re-enter them on each subsequent visit to the site.) Tell me about becoming a member
    Right Click the tartan image with your Mouse and select "Email Picture...." to Send your new tartan to your home address or to a friend.
    See what items you can have made from your newly woven tartan.
    If you go on to have your tartan woven, you can then Record it in the International Tartan Index  - the industry standard electronic tartan archive (chargeable service but discounted for Members).

The Tartan Design programme is a bit of interactive fun for young and old alike. Skilled tartan designing requires a combination of artistic flair, some knowledge of textile design and an awareness of tartan and clan history. If you've whetted your appetite for your own tartan but haven't managed to produce one that you like, then take advantage of our very professional tartan design service that is used by many high profile individuals and companies. In line with the excellent service provided we do of course charge a professional fee.
